Mindfulness

There are many benefits of practising mindfulness. The main benefit is to lower stress after the body has released the stress hormone cortisol.

Mindfulness engages the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for restoring the body to base levels after a stress response, calming it down by lowering the heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension. When we practice mindfulness, our thoughts tune into what we're sensing in the present moment rather than rehashing the past or imagining the future.

Essentially it is about helping you become calmer and in turn helping you deal with stressful situations.

There are different ways of practising mindfulness, meditation is the most well-known, but anything that takes the focus away from personal anxieties such as listening to music, reading, exercise, breathing techniques and artwork. These all help to reduce stress and improve mental health.
