Introduction
This course gives students a hands-on, practical introduction to the world of computer networking and cyber security.
It develops the knowledge and skills needed to understand how networks operate, how data is kept secure, and how IT systems are protected from cyber threats.
You will learn to think like a network administrator—designing and managing networked systems—while also exploring the techniques used by cyber security professionals to identify and prevent vulnerabilities.
Is it for me?
If you enjoy problem solving, logical thinking, and understanding how technology works “behind the scenes”, this course is for you.
You’ll enjoy it if you like:
- Working with computer hardware and software
- Using tools to analyse and secure systems
- Investigating real-world case studies of cyber attacks
- Completing practical tasks and portfolio-based assignments
It’s ideal for students who are curious about IT infrastructure, cyber threats, and digital forensics — and who may be considering a future career in networking, cyber security, or IT support.
What will I study and how will I be assessed?

F193 – Fundamentals of Cyber Security
Develop an understanding of cyber threats, security principles, and the importance of protecting data and systems. You’ll explore real-world attack types and preventative measures. Assessment: External exam (OCR-set and marked)
F194 – Fundamentals of Networks
Learn how computer networks operate, including: Network types and topologies (LAN, WAN, client-server, peer-to-peer), Protocols, addressing and network design, The purpose of routers, switches, and firewalls, Assessment: External exam (OCR-set and marked)
F195 – Preventing Cyber Attacks
Build on your understanding of cyber security by analysing vulnerabilities and evaluating different defence mechanisms. You’ll apply techniques to prevent and mitigate attacks. Assessment: (internal assessment, moderated by OCR)
Optional Modules (to be chosen by the school)
In addition to the three mandatory units, students complete one optional NEA unit as decided by the centre. One of the following will be offered:
- F196 – Digital Forensic Investigation: Learn how to collect, analyse and preserve digital evidence in simulated investigations. Explore techniques used to track unauthorised activity on computer systems.
- F197 – Penetration Testing and Incident Response: Apply ethical hacking techniques to test network security and develop strategies for responding to security breaches or incidents.
- F198 – Implementing Secure Local Area Networks (LANs): Design and configure secure small-scale networks, applying encryption, authentication and access control policies to protect users and data.
Each optional unit is internally assessed (coursework/NEA) and moderated by OCR.
How will this course support my future plans?
The Cambridge Advanced National prepares students for further study or employment in the fast-growing fields of IT, networking, and cyber security.
You’ll develop transferable skills such as:
- Logical thinking and problem-solving
- Project planning and documentation
- Working independently and to professional standards
Progression routes include: Higher Education in subjects like Cyber Security, Computer Networks, Information Systems, Digital Forensics or Computer Science. Apprenticeships or entry-level roles in Network Support, IT Infrastructure, or Cyber Security Operations
The qualification also complements A-Level Computer Science for students seeking a broader digital skill set.
