The Year 7 & 8 French Trip 2019
At the beginning of July, Mrs Greening, Mr Ward and Mr Barker took 27 Year 7 and 8 students to Normandy to practice their French, learn about the culture, and sample the cuisine. Mrs Greening reports,
We spend a fabulous few days "en France" with our great Yr 7 and Yr 8 French linguists.
Despite a long coach journey it was well worth the effort and we had such a busy programme of events. It's not often you get to say you have stayed in a castle with its own outdoor heated pool which served German officers in World War 2!
Our students took part in a tasting session trying frogs legs and snails which was followed up by delicious crepes as a reward for their bravery!
The students were tasked with buying produce produce in the local market (all French speaking, of course!) before preparing a gourmet lunch, judged by the chateau chef.
For the historians, we visited the 70m Bayeux Tapestry, paid respects in the American Cemetery at Omaha, watched footage of the D Day landings in a 360* cinema and took a tour of a D-Day landing beach in Arromanches. Whilst on the beach, one of the group told Mrs Greening that his Grandad was actually part of the D-Day landings and he loved being able to retrace his steps.
For the sporty, the pool sessions and the other facilities ensured that there was plenty of outdoor fun - volleyball, table football, rounders and football.
Here are some comments from our students (some of which were on the trip the year before):
" We loved travelling by ferry this year and the extra night made all the difference to what we could fit in. There was more time for shopping and we even had an extra pool swim". Yr 8 repeat students.
"I was nervous about the frogs legs and snails but it was only a taste session and the yummy crepes for dessert made up for it!" Yr 7 student.
"I loved using my French on the market challenge to order food items." Yr 7 student.
"Visiting the three different cemeteries was really moving and they were all so different. It was great chilling on the beach in between too." Yr 7 student.
"Thanks so much for taking XXX on the trip. They have had a ball. We have loved following you on the twitter feed and we would highly recommend this trip." Yr 7 parent feedback.
"A huge thanks for taking XXX to France. She is buzzing about her experience." Yr 7 parent feedback
It was a pleasure to take the "French Crew" from Yr 7 and 8 and as ever they were a credit to the school.
