Yr 13 BTEC Science Trip
Yesterday Mrs Chambers and Mr Bridge took our Year 13 BTEC Science students to an event entitled ‘Into Film, Into Space’ at the Showcase Cinema, Birstall. The afternoon was run in association with West Yorkshire STEM (who promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and the educational charity Into Film.
The trip supported 2 units of the course: Science in Film and Astronomy. The group listened to a fascinating lecture by the award winning Dolby engineer, James Shannon about the Physics of sound in film. James is a senior sound consultant at Dolby Laboratories. He has worked on Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit and Everest in recent years.
Our students were then treated to a screening of the 2013 film Gravity as it won an Oscar for sound.
During his lecture James made the point that the British film industry has to recruit it scientists from abroad and they want to encourage more good scientists to consider film as a career.
All our Yr 13 scientists came away inspired by the trip and with a new perspective on where science can take them.< Back to all news stories
