World Book Day (week) Preview
Next term our English and Literacy department have planned loads of events to engage our students with books and celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March.
On World Book Day, during lesson time, all our teaching staff across school will be reading short extracts from their favourite novel. Where possible these will have a connection to their subject area (e.g. sci-fi in Science, exotic locations in Geography and historic adventures in History) showing the diversity of genres available.
Book Character Hunt
Some of our (braver) staff and sixth formers will be dressing up as their favourite character from a novel and students will be given quiz sheets to link the teacher with the character and book.
We will also have three published authors visiting and working with our students throughout the day:
- Australian author, Matthew Wooding, autor of 'Letters to Nan' and 'No Place Called Home'.
- Linda Coggin, author of ‘The Boy with the Tiger’s Heart’ and ‘The Dog, Ray’.
- Paula Rawsthorne, an award winning author of the young adult novels ‘The Truth about Celia Frost’ and ‘Blood Tracks’.
Competition: The Famous Five Adventure
A series of clues will be placed around school for student teams to discover. The clues will lead pupils to a final location where book tokens will be hidden. The first team to complete the treasure hunt gets 5 x £5 book token prizes.
Creative Writing Club
Our Creative Writing Club students will be spending Wednesday 1st March with Mr Crawford working on an exciting project - look out for more information soon...

Students and staff will have a log-on to a BGS website where they can record books read between now and the end of the year. The target is a minimum of 3 books per person, that's a total of 7,500 books in a year!
