On 6th November Mr Swann took 17 Year 10 boys to BBG Academy for their second round match in the National Vase Competition.
Mr Swann reports:
Our opponents had come off a convincing win against Ilkley and were going to offer a tough challenge that we were ready to match after our equally convincing first round win.
The rain began as we left school and after a reasonably good journey and a well organised warm up we were ready for action.
Our target was to impose ourselves physically in the early stages of the game. I am pleased to say that the BGS team took this literally and physically dominated the opposition in the initial stages of the match. After turning possession over and moving the ball wide after some excellent driving runs from Leon, Benedict and Rohan, Sam Mantle dived into the corner for our opening score.
We continued in the same manner throughout the remainder of the first half, combining effective forward play with an ability to identify and attack space wide. Further tries came from Captain Craig C (2), the first with a lovely dummy and break from 30m out. His centre partner Will M scored another after a lovely step and powerful leg drive. Matthew R completed a fine first half. Bingley leading 27-0 at half time.
After the team talk we spoke about continuing but also about controlling the game. Jack T managed the game well mixing up our options with powerful forward runs and wide passes and the second half also brought some excellent tactical kicking. After conceding an early try, Bingley fought back and after gaining good territory, the impressive Matty R made an excellent 30m break. On being tackled agonisingly close he offloaded to Xavier M, who stepped inside and scored with a brilliant one handed grounding. Our final try was scored by Curtis H after a cross field kick from Craig.
A truly brilliant all round rugby performance by all players involved and we are looking forward to the next round.
