Maths Inspiration and Primary Links

Mr Ninson, Maths teacher and Primary link with the 4LC (Crossflatts Primary, Eldwick Primary, Priestthorpe Primary and Saltaire Primary), has been running a series of classes and events for students and their families to help them engage with Maths.

Last Friday Mr Ninson took a group of Year 9 students to a 4LC Maths competition at Saltaire Primary. Each of our students did a great job of coaching and mentoring a Year 4 team in problem solving, times tables and division in the hope that they would take home the trophy. Competition was tough with all teams doing extremely well but Priestthorpe Primary took the title as Year 4 Maths champions! Our student volunteers really enjoyed taking part and their confidence in their own abilities (especially in Maths) really increased during the day. All of those involved gained valuable team building skills which they will be able to use in their studies in the future.

The first of Mr Ninson’s Maths sessions, held on 12th Jan, Sharon Day ran a Practice Makes Perfect event for Primary and Year 7 students and their families. Mrs Day talked about getting the basics right and families were shown games and activities involving Maths that should be played at home. A follow up session is planned for 29th Feb to build on the first session and share experiences of the activities set in the first meeting.

In March Mr Ninson is holding a Maths Inspiration Day including a performance from a Maths Magician.

Mr Ninson said of the sessions, “By promoting Maths in this way we hope to engage students and families in the learning process and build confidence, and in turn attainment, in the subject.”

The program will be finished off by a Celebration event in July to congratulate students and their families for taking part in the sessions.
