Joseph is a 'Fireman' on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway
Yr 11 student Joseph Halloway became toe youngest 'fireman' at Keighley & Worth Valley railway earlier this month.
Joseph has volunteered for the past 3 years at the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway and has taken on many tasks like ticket collecting, stewarding, cleaning, gardening, track maintenance and stations work.
For the past year Joseph has been working in the locomotive department and in February he was able to start training as a fireman. The training takes a few years to become fully qualified but Joseph undertook his first day fuelling the steam engine at the beginning of the month. It is an extremely physical job with much of the work being shovelling the coal, into the engine's firebox. When Joseph joined the locomotive department he undertook tasks such as lighting the engine. This can take up to 6 hours and as it has to be ready by 10:00am Joseph had to be working at 4am!
Well done Joseph, your dedication to the Railway is a credit to you.< Back to all news stories
