Bingley Grammar School

Former Student Gareth Batty

Former Bingley Grammar School student Gareth Batty is playing with the England team on their tour of Bangladesh.

Gareth, who will be 39 on October 13, was a surprise choice by the England selectors, not just because of his age, but because he last played a Test match for his country as long ago as 2005 while his last one day international was in 2009.

However, England needed extra spin bowling for their Bangladesh tour and also for their subsequent tour of India and Gareth, who has played first class cricket for 19 years, fitted the bill as an experienced off spinner, who can also bat.

Gareth, who played Bradford League cricket for Bradford & Bingley and Keighley, joined Yorkshire in 1997, but moved to Surrey the following year and played there until 2001.

However, his career only blossomed when he moved to Worcester in 2002. Then, after eight successful years with Worcestershire he returned to Surrey in 2010 and is now captain.

He led Surrey back to the First Division of the County Championship in 2015 and under his leadership they have also reached the final of the one day cup at Lord’s in each of the last two seasons. Unfortunately, they were beaten on each occasion – by Gloucestershire in 2015 and Warwickshire this year.
