Arek Hersh Visit - Monday
17th July

Auschwitz survivor and friend of  Bingley Grammar School, Arek Hersh and his wife Jean came to speak to students on Monday 17th July.

A few weeks ago Miss Shah asked students in her Year 9 classes to send her an email if they wanted to hear Arek's story and explaining why - she was inundated with messages from students.

Over 50 Yr 9 students were joined by several members of our local community to hear Arek's improtant message about tolerance as he delivered his story as living history.

One of our student's grandparents who had read Arek's book attended the talk, joined by a neighbour of another student. Mrs Halford, parent of Yr 13 Megan (one of the 6th form students who has met Arek previously and has also been to Auschwitz as a member of the Holocaust Education Trust) also attended the talk.

After speaking to the year 9 students and our visitors, Arek met the Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award students who gave Arek a presentation on all the work they have done this year to serve the local community. They then presented Arek with two gifts and asked him questions about his story of survival.  The presentation was also attended by Elizabeth Howat from the ABoY Youth Trust who was very impressed by the students.

Arek and Jean then had lunch with Miss Shah and a group of students. As always it was a privilege to have Arek and Jean visit our school.
