Bingley Grammar School

News from the sports desk - Year 10 go to Accrington

Today Pete Rolls and I took 10 Yr10 students to Accrington to play in a 7 aside football tournament run by Burnley FC.

The lads were amazing from start to finish and represented the badge with honour.

There were 7 teams in total, including 2 teams from our neighbours Beckfoot.

Bingley flew out of the blocks winning 2 out of their first 2 games. 2-0 vs Marsden High (Charlie R with both goals) , 1-0 vs Penske Vale (Logan B). The team played the ball about for fun creating chances at will and limiting both opponents to only 1 shot on target across the 2 games. Total domination!

It was then time for a little break so we had lunch.

After lunch we played West Craven High School, what a tough game to play straight after lunch! Their team was made up of huge 15 year old boys that predominantly played rugby! They had clearly watched us play before and put 5 outfield players behind the ball and completely shut up shop! Despite Bingley winning a penalty late on in this match we were unable to capitalise on this and the game finished 0-0.

Bingley played Rhyddings next and it was safe to say their lunch had settled! An emphatic 4-0 win with goals from Cameron C, Charlie R & Stanley L x2. I think Stan would like you all to know one of his goals was a free kick from miles out!

This left us with 2 games left to play and sitting in second place in the table.

Both Beckfoot teams were next!

First up were ‘Beckfoot A’ and despite a fantastic effort from the lads they were undone by a very fortunate deflected goal. We lost our first game of the tournament 1-0.

The final game was straight after we’d just played Beckfoot A… our next opponent was ‘Beckfoot B’.

Unfortunately at this stage tired legs and fatigue had kicked in and we were undone by an impressive performance from Beckfoot 3-0 to them.

This meant we dropped out of 2nd and into 3rd meaning we missed out on the opportunity to play in the final.

Despite this, the lads we took had a blast! I must say from the moment we arrived to the second we left our boys were respectful, polite and did Bingley Grammar proud.

One of the coaches/organisers spoke to me at the end of the day and said how impressed he was with our team and the style of football we tried to play. He also added that he’d spoken to a number of our lads (Charlie, Logan & Ash) about the possibility of going for some trials!

Overall a fantastic day out!
